Re: Glenda Brawley
Dear Sir:
I am submitting petitions from meetings of the United African Movement held recently in Brooklyn seeking to vacate and set aside a fugitive warrant made and entered in June 1988 as a result of Glenda Brawley’s refusal to give testimony to a Dutchess County grand jury concerning the disappearance of her daughter, Tawana Brawley.
Yesterday, Greg Anderson, Barry Bonds’ personal trainer, was released from prison after he had refused to give testimony to a federal grand jury concerning Bonds. The general rule is that an incarcerated, contemptuous and recalcitrant grand jury witness is not given a life sentence. Instead, the incarcerated witness is released from prison after the grand jury has finished its investigation.
The Dutchess County grand jury investigating claims that Tawana Brawley was kidnapped and raped in November 1987 finished its investigation into those claims no later than October 1988. No lawful basis existed for giving Glenda Brawley a life sentence.
On November 28, the Black community will recognize those twenty years of struggle in addition to honoring those activists who have been involved in resisting myriad instances of injustices practiced on descendants of enslaved Africans simply because of race. Our community is seeking the appearance of Glenda Brawley in New York City on November 28 without fear of arrest.
No reason exists for continuing an outstanding fugitive warrant against Glenda Brawley. Immediately upon your receipt of this letter, the persons who signed the petitions are asking that you take immediate action to ensure that Glenda Brawley can reappear immediately in New York without fear of arrest.
Hopefully, your decision will be immediate and that you will contact UAM’s office promptly to inform it that preparations can be made for Glenda Brawley to safely return to New York on November 28, 2007.
