Marcus and Elijah: Advocates of Land Ownership

Leola and I wish to extend our thanks to those persons who were able to sacrifice time and resources to express support for our plight in PWV Acquisition v. Maddox which appeared on the calendar of Part A of the Manhattan Housing Court in Room 523 on October 5.
At approximately 7:00 a.m., I was informed of the death of a family member, in the truest sense of the word, to whom I also had legal responsibilities. Your presence made the difference and the case was adjourned to Thursday, October 26 in the same venue. It was also heartening to know that attorney Joseph Mack made an appearance and, if necessary, I am sure that he would have swung into action.
“Land is the basis of all revolutions.” These are the words of Malcolm X. Elijah Muhammad taught him well. Although Blacks have never enjoyed legal protections in the United States, our Ancestors had accumulated thirty million acres of land in this country ninety years ago. By this time, whites had already seized Indian lands. We currently own well under five million acres.
While the white man was seizing Indian lands, our Ancestors recognized that freedom was measured by land ownership. They sought property rights. The NAACP was established to influence Blacks to secure civil rights. Property deeds were, supposedly, of no moment for Blacks. Marcus Garvey’s arrival put a wrinkle into this sinister plot.
Today, our people are marching lockstep to the tune of civil rights leaders. There are hardly any property rights advocates today. When the sheriff or marshal comes knocking at your door, you are standing alone while these law enforcement officials are armed to the teeth.
This is state-sponsored terrorism. See the shotgun killing of Elanor Bumpurs. She was removed from her public housing apartment naked and like a slaughtered deer. An ethnic group, which allows for the mistreatment of its women, is already enslaved.
You will never find civil rights leaders struggling against “Black removal.” In fact, it was civil rights leaders, acting in concert with Black elected officials, that allowed for the wholesale removal of Blacks from Harlem.
These same culprits are now headed to the Brooklyn Gold Rush. This is the way prostitutes behaved in the California Gold Rush. History is repeating itself. “Those who fail to learn from the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them.”
During the formation of the American kleptocracy, conquest was the prime method of securing land. After the establishment of the Supreme Court, the warrant of eviction, with backing from the military, became the prime tool. This prompted the “Trail of Tears.” It also caused the death of Elanor Bumpurs.
Nonetheless, the New York City Council has failed to put checks and balances on this legal weapon. Instead, it is looking the other way while tenants are being railroaded in housing courts. This legislative body has also refused to provide legal representation for the poor. Today, justice is like a chicken going into a fox den.
We must learn that power starts at the bottom and goes to the top. It is housing court judges, criminal court judges and family court judges that make immediate decisions about our lives. These decisions affect our survival and our well-being.
Yet, we will rush out this year, following Judas goats, to ensure that a donkey occupies the governor’s mansion. This donkey has deep pockets with a mission to destroy the poor. The Judas goats are getting paid to sell you out. What is your excuse?
If we had real leaders, they would have already called for an emergency political convention to occur on or before October 27 to fashion a strategy for November 7. A “War on Blacks” is running amuck. Unfortunately, we will approach the polling booths like our Ancestors approached cotton, tobacco, rice and sugar cane fields: No agenda and no strategy in our own self-interest.
