The Passing of Juanita Brawley Strong
The physical life of Juanita Brawley, Tawana Brawley’s aunt, spanned from September 24, 1947 to November 21, 2006. She made her transition in North Carolina. Before Tawana was kidnapped and raped, Juanita had played a significant role in raising Tawana in upstate New York, NY. This support continued until her passing. Her former husband, Matthew Strong, was a policeman in New York. She is survived by a son and a daughter.
Juanita had sought to get me involved in the case. I said no. The NAACP was representing the family. Sonny Carson, an ancestor, would contact me. My condition for representation of the family was proof of continued support for the case by the Black community and its activists until victory was achieved.
Sonny Carson designated December 12, 1987 in Newburgh, NY as a proof of perennial support for Tawana. The attendees and promisors included Min. Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Sol Williams of Newburgh, Viola Plummer, Sonny Carson and attorneys Roger Wareham, Michael Warren and C. Vernon Mason.
Juanita was buried on November 24 exactly nineteen years after the kidnapping of her niece. She went into a coma and at the same time her first granddaughter, of her daughter, Kenya, was born in California. Juanita was a SUNY graduate and worked for state and federal governments.
After her sister, Glenda Brawley-King, had to flee New York, Juanita would also leave the state. Glenda is still subject to arrest in New York. Steven Pagones, who was involved in Tawana’s kidnap and rape is still searching for her. At this stage, I am the last line of defense between the KKK and Tawana Brawley.
In the meantime, Eliot Spitzer lost a bid to become state attorney general in 1994. The plot later was to energize the Black vote in 1998 which usually only vote the top of the ballot. Sptizer concocted the scheme that his election as state attorney general would automatically allow for my reinstatement to practice law in New York. Rev. Al Sharpton received the assignment. It worked.
Eight years later, Spitzer is the Governor-elect after eight years as state attorney general. Robert Abrams is back in the driver’s seat as Spitzer’s mentor. He also heads Andrew Cuomo’s transition team for state attorney general. Abrams is also the co-chair of Spitzer’s government reform committee. White supremacy creates permanent marriages. On the other hand, Black leaders are prostitutes.
Abrams’ law partner has just been assigned, as a federal judge, to decide my fate in Brooklyn Federal Court. The Senate confirmed his appointment on May 4, 2006. It all started with tricking Blacks in 1998. Two things are dangerous in Black hands –the dollar and the ballot. If we were given reparations today, it would be all over but the shout.
The UAM forum on Wednesday, November 22, was well-attended and well-spirited. I found out about Juanita’s transition after the forum. Juanita, who was a loyal supporter of UAM, had to have been present through her spirit. It was a powerful night in all respects.
Min. Clemson Brown was already headed to the Carolinas. He found out the real reason for his trip to the Carolinas on Thursday. He will be representing UAM at the homegoing services and will be joining Glenda, Ralph King and Tawana in the celebration of Juanita’s life.
