Musical Chairs are Counting Down to You

Last week, I wrote a column in the New York Amsterdam News entitled “Jena Six: Good intentions and a bad plan.” The defense of the “Jena 6” is authentic. Unfortunately, the case is being handled for personal gain. The motives are greed and egotism.
Moreover, there is a media white-out in the tri-state area. We are being dumbed-down. Black selected officials and Black media hounds have assumed the reins of the “Jena 6.” White lawyers are now replacing the Black lawyers who got involved in the case to secure justice. We have witnessed the same modus operandi in New York.
Before the Wednesday evening forum, I spent a few hours doing some research. I found some disturbing facts. Under Louisiana law, Mychal Bell should have been released from jail on September 14. I have always wondered why he was unable to post $90,000 bail before September 14. The Black community secured the release of all the Central Park jogger defendants in 1989.
Although this fact is of no current consolation to Bell, Louisiana law gives an automatic pardon to anyone convicted of committing aggravated battery. It raises further questions about prosecuting a child in adult court. Two plus two is not four. Why did Black leaders call for commutation? This is a step backwards.
Once the intermediate appellate court in Louisiana tossed the adult conviction on September 14, Bell should have become a free person. Double jeopardy prevents a person from being prosecuted twice for the same offense even if the second prosecution is in a juvenile court. Bell is simply being falsely imprisoned while the media enjoys hefty ratings and Black leaders slap each other on the back.
My concern is about the dumbing-down of the Black community especially in the tri-state area. Blacks in this area are even unaware of facts that are common knowledge to Blacks throughout the United States. Local commercial radio today sounds like re-runs. Everyone is as happy as a lark.
We will resume the discussion of the legal issues in Megan Williams, O.J. Simpson, “Jena 6” and Isaiah Thomas on Wednesday, September 26. When we look at the cases, we are getting a sneak preview of how it will look when we are strapped in the hot seat. These cases represent two evil habits of whites: lynching and rape.
Unless Mychal Bell walks out of prison today, September 20, we will have failed. From my perspective, Bell should have been released from jail unconditionally on September 14. I was the first person to make this argument. Others claim that the district attorney should get fourteen days to make the decision to appeal the order of the intermediate appellate court. Truth is on my side.
No reason existed for the 30,000 protestors in Jena not to have raised the $90,000 bond. There is no stay on his being released from jail. This is exactly what occurred with the “Central Park 6.” Black people went to Jena without a plan.
