The Best Kept Secret in the United States

The "Freedom Express" is headed to Washington, DC this weekend. Rev. Al Sharpton has promised to invite Councilman Charles Barron to appear before the audience of his nationally-syndicated, satellite, radio program before October 9. There is a delayed broadcast every weekday at 8:00 p.m. on WWRL-AM (1600).

Councilman Barron will headline a forum on "Third-party Politics 101" at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. The media is not eager to publicize this forum and for good reason. Black people must remain on the plantation politically, economically and culturally.

It will take a grassroots effort to get out the word about Saturday in DC. Any family member, friend or business associate in D.C. and nearby municipalities in Virginia and Maryland should be contacted and not only urged to attend this historic forum but to encourage others to do the same.

While the media is raving about the Tea Party, it has failed to publicize the success of the Freedom Party in New York which trumped the Tea Party in collecting signatures to get on the gubernatorial ballot for the general election on November 2 in New York. Moreover, the Tea Party has been given the boot from the ballot in New York.

No Black and Latino-led political party has ever been able to get on the ballot in any state. DC is a territory. The Freedom Party was inspired by Fannie Lou Hamer and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party which was never able to secure ballot status in Mississippi. Similarly, the Rainbow Coalition was never able to emerge as a political party.

To achieve ballot status in New York, the Freedom Party had to gather signatures in fifteen of New York's twenty-nine congressional districts. To gather these signatures, the Freedom Party had to connect with the most populous, congressional districts for Blacks which include upstate New York.

There is the gubernatorial election in New York on November 2. The Democratic and Republican parties have fielded all-white, all-male, statewide slates. The Freedom Party is a more diverse slate since it includes a Black male from Brooklyn, a Black female from Buffalo and a Latino male from the Bronx.

In 1948, the Dixiecrats opposed diversity. Without the Freedom Party, New York would be headed back to 1948. The Tea Party is the instigator. Unless Blacks, Latinos and Asians form and sustain a third party, this country is moving back to the right. We can ill-afford to be no more than spectators.

A forum on the future of Black and Latino coalition politics is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street in Washington, D.C. Gubernatorial candidate and current member of the New York City Council, Charles Barron, will be the keynote speaker.

Councilman Barron is available to discuss the significance of this historic forum. Blacks, Latinos and Asians comprise over forty percent of New York's population. In the next decade, these groups will constitute a majority of the state's population. They already constitute a majority of New York City's population. Currently, New York is controlled by another coalition: The 3I's.
