Let Your Voice Be Heard

Earl Caldwell has invited Bro. Alton H. Maddox Jr. to appear on his WBAI-FM radio program on 99.5 fm on Friday, December 2, 2005 in New York City at 3:00 p.m. This is a rarity for New York City. Bro. Maddox, on the other hand, is welcomed on several radio stations in Atlanta and he can be heard monthly. It was in New York City, however, that he consistently sacrificed his own personal interests for the welfare of his people.
These sacrifices have already caused a fifteen year suspension from the practice of law. It would be difficult to find another person in New York who has made similar sacrifices and no attorney has made himself or herself consistently available pro bono to represent Blacks. Yet, these persons have ready access to the Black media. Obviously, something has gone wrong.
I submitted a personal service announcement to the Amsterdam News about an appreciation night for Bro. Maddox on Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Elks Plaza, 1068 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. I have been assured that the announcement will appear in the December 1-7 edition of the newspaper.
Bro. Maddox writes a weekly column which is widely read around the country by people who, otherwise, have stated that they would not buy the Amsterdam News which receives the additional profits from his writings. Bro. Maddox doesn’t receive one dime from the paper but must spend several hundred dollars weekly to pay for research, trade journals which are unavailable on the internet, editing and typing and other expenses.
William Raspberry of the Washington Post and Bob Herbert of the New York Times not only receive substantial income but also staff. Yet, their columns, unlike Bro. Maddox’s, must satisfy white editors. His columns are African-centered around every issue of current interest. This is rare reading.
