Is” Like It Is” in the ER?
Gil Noble of WABC-TV’s “Like It Is” raised the most fundamental question affecting descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States and asked Rev. Herbert Oliver and I to answer it: Are descendants of enslaved Africans citizens of the United States? For those persons who are seeking to become mayors, governors and presidents on Democratic and Republican tickets, the answer is yes.
During the taping of the program for Sunday, November 21, I discovered that “Like It Is” has been permanently reduced from sixty minutes to thirty minutes weekly. At a time when a dumb down approach is in full gear, the Black community can ill-afford a reduced time slot for “Like It Is.” To be sure, it is difficult, among other things, for any guest to provide the audience with a comprehensive analysis of a problem with one eye on the clock.
At the beginning of ABC’s “Monday Night Football” this past Monday, there was a scene with a white actress from “Desperate Housewives” importuning a Black football player from the Philadelphia Eagles to take care of her sexual needs rather than doing his job as a football player. He melted when she disrobed. White folks immediately caused an electronic traffic jam at ABC and the NFL.
This should be our reaction to the reduction of time at “Like It Is”, in particular and the dumb down approach for programming over the airwaves and available to the Black community, in general. The airwaves belong to the people and “Monday Night Football” found that out this week. White politicians are demanding that the FCC fine ABC.
No Black elected official in the tri-state area has launched a charge against medial outlets before the FCC for shortchanging their constitutents. It also shows that those persons supposedly running for the offices of mayor, governor and president are conducting scams to shakedown white political aspirants for either dividing the Black vote or delivering it to the wealthy whites since no Black can win one of these offices without strong, Black radio and television outlets.
Wittingly or unwittingly, we are returning back to slavery through our conduct. The Black community is demanding strong Black bodies through exercise, diet and use of herbs. Yet, no venues exist in the Black community to do mental exercises. Without these mental exercises from oral and written communications, the brain is unable to get necessary workouts and it will surely decay.
In these critical times, Black people need a marketplace of ideas. If you had true representation, this memo would be unnecessary. Black elected officials maintain that it is better for them to receive than to give. This greed is leading the Black community into poverty.
