Dear Friend:
UAM is embarking on one its busiest seasons in years. The dinner-dance, fund-raiser on this past Saturday evening at the Cotton Club was well-attended. Freedom Retreat for Boys and Girls invariably operates in the red. Our parents and guardians are not plutocrats.
Because UAM is well grounded for struggle, it has taken the vanguard position in the establishment of a Freedom Party with ballot status. This will be the first in the history of this country for such a Black political party. Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., among others, are smiling. The Black community will be given the opportunity to salute Councilman Charles Barron in Brooklyn on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
UAM and/or the Freedom Party have a number of activities this week including the Elks Plaza, 1068 Harriet Tubman (Fulton Street) nr. Classon in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, June 30 at 7:00 p.m.; CEMOTAP Headquarters, 135-09 Rockaway Blvd. in Queens on Thursday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m.; Support Rally for John White at Nazarene Congregational Church, UCC, 506 McDonough (Patchen Ave.) in Brooklyn on Saturday June 26 at 2:00 p.m.; and the statewide convention for the Freedom Party on Sunday, June 27 at 4:30 p.m. at Siloam Presbyterian Church, 260 Jefferson Ave. (cor. of Marcy) in Brooklyn. "A" train to Nostrand.
Although UAM has unfinished business, it will be tabled temporarily. In the meantime, we must plan and provide resources for Freedom Retreat for Boys and Girls and political education workshops for Freedom Party . UAM has already hit the field running in New York City and Buffalo.
UAM will also have to take responsibility for initially organizing 53 counties, politically, mostly in upstate New York. By law, we must obtain signatures throughout New York with a focus, by law, in 15 congressional districts. Our summer headquarters for both the Freedom Retreat and the Freedom Party will also be in Kerhonkson.
I was in Buffalo last week on my own dime and a donation from three members of UAM, "Jane Doe", "Mary Roe" and "Robert Roe". We will have to spread the organizational support for the Freedom Party. This is history in the making and it will not knock again. On the other hand, failed lessons will repeat themselves.
UAM has hit the ground running for our children. UAM also operates the only African-centered, sleep-away, summer camp in the nation. There are still other issues to be discussed, however. Marcus Garvey is our spiritual mentor and he was no couch potato. Queen Mother Moore, a friend of mine and a client, would often say, "You are too slow children." This means that we must "get the jump" on our oppressor.
There will be a UAM membership meeting on Saturday, June 26 at 9:00 a.m. at Elks Plaza, 1068 Harriet Tubman (Fulton Street) nr. Classon in Brooklyn. Take the "C" train to Franklin Ave. Walk two blocks to Elks Plaza. Hopefully, you will be present but critical contributions for UAM can be sent immediately to United African Movement, P.O. Box 35, Bronx, NY 10471. Time is of the essence.

Freedom is not free. The NYPD alone outspends the Black community in politics. Some of this blood money is donated to the Democratic Party to muzzle Black elected officials while it terrorizes the Black community. Most judges are enrolled in the Democratic Party in New York. Everyday, they are "throwing the book" at Blacks. Obviously, the Democratic Party is practicing apartheid. Blacks are its prey.
In struggle,
Alton H. Maddox, Jr.
